Televangelist Who Denies PTSD Speaks at Military Prayer Event

PTSD and Fundies

There is a large group of chickenhawks, Christian Dominionists and rightwingers who deny PTSD, work to minimize and prevent military veterans and contractors from receiving PTSD disability benefits, (Boston Review), while always calling for more war.

PTSD is not functional to the war-making enterprise, so many less-than-sophisticated religious fundamentalists say, pray it away.

Even better god loves war, so praying as a weapon in the long tradition of killing for Christ continues for young servicemembers in training. See Trump to ask for $716 billion in defense spending in 2019 budget as Trump works for a war with Iran. It's what god wants.

One really nutty religious fundie coming next week to Fort Jackson, Feb. 1, to give the troops the word epitomizes our religious-military-industrial complex.

From Hemant Mehta at Patheos:

Now that he has a new private jet, televangelist Kenneth Copeland is heading to Fort Jackson, South Carolina — to the nation’s largest training installation — to headline a National Prayer Breakfast event.

That alone may not be a huge deal, but Chris Rodda points out that Copeland is an awful choice to speak at any military event — even a Christian one — because he’s said in the past that soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are kidding themselves because God would never let that happen.

Reading from Numbers 32: 20-22, Copeland said, 'So this is a promise — if you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before the Lord for the war … you shall return, you’re coming back, and be guiltless before the Lord and before the nation.'

'Any of you suffering from PTSD right now, you listen to me,' Copeland said as [pseudo-historian David] Barton affirmed him. 'You get rid of that right now. You don’t take drugs to get rid of it. It doesn’t take psychology. That promise right there will get rid of it.'
Video of Copeland's medical brilliance on PTSD:
Below is the text of the letter Mikey Weinstein sent to the Commanding General of Fort Jackson to work for the freedom our service-members in a secular military.
--

Dear Major General John P. “Pete” Johnson,

Sir, it is with deep respect that I earnestly write to you this morning on behalf of 56 of your U.S Army subordinates (Officers, NCOs and U.S. Army civilians), directly under your command, with an expeditious, rational and reasonable demand in your official capacity as the Commanding General of Fort Jackson, South Carolina. For the record, sir, 32 of these complainants practice the Christian faith (Protestant or Roman Catholic), 6 are Jewish, 8 are Muslims, 2 are Hindus, 1 is a Native American spiritualist and the remainder would describe themselves as nontheist, agnostic, atheist, secularist or humanist.

By way of brief introduction, sir, my name is Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein and I am the Founder and President of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). As you may know, MRFF is a large, civil rights advocacy, nonprofit organization founded in late 2005 which vigorously protects and defends, inter alia, the Constitutional, First Amendment civil rights of DoD servicemen and women for Church/State separation in the United States armed forces. Presently, including the 56 servicemen and women mentioned above, MRFF proudly represents over 53,400 United States soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the active duty, reserve, national guard and civilian components of our nation’s military as well as veterans. Approximately 96% of MRFF’s total clients are devoted practitioners of many varied denominations of the Christian faith; about 3/4 of that number are from a large spectrum of Protestant sects and the bulk of the remaining 1/4 are Roman Catholic.

General Johnson, sir, please allow me to cut to the chase as I know you must be very busy as, likewise, we are at MRFF.

General, every year at this time like clockwork MRFF is usually inundated with a plethora of complaints about matters associated with the so-called “National Prayer Breakfasts” (NPBs) and “National Prayer Luncheons” (NPLs) which so many military installations hold on an annual basis. It has  been MRFF’s experience that such events, though billed as “non-mandatory” and pure-as-the-driven-snow “voluntary” are very often QUITE the opposite, in all actuality, for so very many unfortunate military subordinates who are “VOLUNTOLD” to attend by their command chains. (I will leave alone, for the moment, the array of serious issues of illicit, First Amendment breaches associated with all of these NPBs and NPLs as they are SO often misused and abused for sinister, twisted purposes of fundamentalist Christian proselytization.)

This new year of 2018 is no different from all of the prior years vis-a-vis the NPBs and NPLs and Fort Jackson’s version of the NPB is currently scheduled for a week from today on Thursday, February 1, 2018. These NPBs and NPLs always feature a special “guest speaker” and THAT, sir, is PRECISELY why I am writing to you this day with a respectful demand for your kind attention and timely help to right an absolutely egregious wrong.

General, do you have ANY idea, sir, whom your staff has selected to be the Fort Jackson special “guest speaker” at your Feb. 1, ’18 NPB?

Assuming you do not, sir, let me please advise you that it is the universally despicable, discredited, fundamentalist Christian extremist/supremacist Kenneth Copeland. Do you know ANYthing of moment about this feckless, religious bully/provocateur, General Johnson?  To aid you in your further research, please see the excerpt in red highlight below from a breaking news article publicly published this VERY morning by MRFF’s Senior Research Director, Ms. Chris Rodda (the full article will be immediately sent to you, as well, this morning for your further review):

--

“Will Kenneth Copeland Tell Soldiers at Fort Jackson Prayer Breakfast that PTSD Isn’t Real?”

He’s been investigated by the Senate for financial misconduct. He’s called himself a “Christian extremist.” His fraudulent practices have been exposed by his own employees. He’s Islamophobic, homophobic, and believes that America is a Christian nation. He needs a private jet because commercial airplanes are filled with demons.

Any one of the above things should make televangelist Kenneth Copeland an obviously inappropriate and outrageous choice to be the speaker for the National Prayer Breakfast observance at any U.S. military installation. And yet Copeland has been invited to do just that, and is scheduled to speak at the February 1 prayer breakfast at Fort Jackson, South Carolina — the U.S. Army’s largest training installation and home to the Armed Forces Army Chaplaincy School and Army’s Drill Sergeant School.

But there’s something else that makes Copeland an even more outrageous choice to speak to any military audience. He has claimed that PTSD isn’t real because it isn’t biblical, saying on a 2013 Veterans Day episode of his TV show:

“Any of you suffering from PTSD right now, you listen to me. You get rid of that right now. You don’t take drugs to get rid of it, and it doesn’t take psychology. That promise right there [referring to a Bible verse he had just read] will get rid of it.”

Copeland’s guest that day, Christian nationalist pseudo-historian David Barton, wholeheartedly agreed, adding that warriors in the Bible fighting in the name of God were “esteemed” and in the “faith hall of fame” because they “took so many people out in battle.”

---

Oh, General Johnson, there is just SO much, much more about this disgusting Copeland person which MRFF could expand upon but suffice it to say that this great homage and special invitation proffered by your command staff to honor a miserable, fundamentalist Christian wretch like Copeland as the special “guest speaker’ at Fort Jackson’s NPB is TOTALLY antithetical to the United States Army’s vaunted “7 Core Values” of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Indeed, General, the SHOCKING selection of such a divisive and corrosive individual/religious predator and bully to be the main speaking attraction at your NPB at Fort Jackson is nothing less than a terminal and swift cancer to the bedrock good order, morale, discipline and unit cohesion of your command at Fort Jackson.

The 56 U.S. Army personnel under your direct command, sir, at Fort Jackson who have pleaded for MRFF to intercede on their collective behalf regarding this sordid matter justly fear punitive reprisal and retribution if they try to express their outrage over Copeland’s selection via their respective chains of command or by “outting” themselves via Inspector General/Equal Employment Opportunity (IG/EEO) complaints.

Therefore, sir, on behalf of our 56 U.S.Army clients, MRFF is officially demanding that you immediately rescind this invitation to Kenneth Copeland to speak at the Fort Jackson NPB. General Johnson, sir, the good news is that there is still time to do the right thing here! Sir, please replace this hideously reprehensible fundamentalist Christian charlatan cum exclusivist bigot with another more respectable and inspiring, inclusive individual. General, please pick SOMEone else, ANYone else who, unlike Copeland who gleefully brags about being a “Christian extremist”, clearly represents and buttresses the aforementioned Army’s “7 Core Values” whilst concomitantly strengthening the “Army Strong” foundations of strength-through-diversity inextricably intertwined with supporting and enhancing good order, morale, discipline and unit cohesion.

General Johnson, I am happy to discuss this urgent matter of MRFF’s demand that you rescind Kenneth Copeland’s Fort Jackson NPB speaking invitation with you at your earliest opportunity should you have any additional queries or desire, for any other reason, to further communicate.

Sincerely and respectfully submitted with best wishes and standing by for your decision,

Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein, Esq.

Trump Preached Hate, Now Forces of Hate are Loosed

Donald Trump smirks at the hate he has used and
inflamed, as decent Republicans such as
Richard Painter condemn the resulting "fascism."

"Let us face the facts. This is a harvest. It is the crop of things sown."

— Ralph McGill, Atlanta Constitution, Oct. 13, 1958. A Church, A School

---
Donald Trump and his Make-America-Great-Again movement got one thing right about the Charlottesville terror-fest they have wrought, responsible for three deaths and dozens sent to the hospital, (New York Times): White Supremacist terror has been going on for a long time in our country.

Trump should know about terror. The Alt Right is a critical part of the Trump adminstration, so any direct condemnation of the white supremacists would be ironic.

Trump has used white supremacist hate for years, inflamed hate, and then congratulated himself on his targeted political-marketing perspicuity.

The White House Charlottesville statement's appeasing equivocation and minimization should signal where America is headed: A bombing of a Mosque in Minnesota, hate murder in Portland, too much hate to list and quantify.

"It is not possible to preach lawlessness and restrict it," warned the southern civil rights writer, Ralph McGill, in 1958.

But that was a different era, and in the words of our friend, Mikey Weinstein, "it's far worse" today (Mal Contends). Weinstein's words were in 2008.

Today, the unite-the-right rally with White House flacking should send the message that the forces of hate are loosed.

Military Civil Rights Advocate Hits Appt of White Supremacist to White House

Can always county on Mikey Weinstein to clobber the bigots.

From the Military Religious Freedom Foundation:

Friends and Allies,

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation's battle for civil liberties just became even more critical and the situation of our non-white and non-Christian troops far more dire. The President Elect is assembling his cabinet and senior White House advisors, and reports are coming in that the Chief Executive of Trump's campaign, Steve Bannon, has been tapped as Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor.

For those unfamiliar with Bannon, he's the deplorable white nationalist behind Breitbart News – a staunch bastion of the worst the alt-right has to offer and a savage opponent of every one of the civil rights we, as Americans, hold so dear.

Breitbart "News" is no more and no less than a front for the anti-Semitic, Islamophobic, white supremacist, alt-right Dominionist movement. Breitbart has attacked myself, MRFF, and the service members we represent repeatedly, sneering at those who reach out to us and insisting on the right of fundamentalist Christian leaders in the military to proselytize to troops under their command.

Bannon himself is the darling of white nationalists, alt-right leaders, and racists across the country. Richard Spencer, who coined the term "alt-right" and who is rabidly anti-Semitic, is thrilled. So is Andrew Anglin, Neo-Nazi and owner of the self-proclaimed "#1 alt-right website" Daily Stormer, although he would have liked to have seen Bannon installed as Chief of Staff.

Ken Reed, the national director of the Neo-Nazi group Aryan Renaissance Society, gleefully posted the news accompanied by hashtags reading #WhiteLivesMatter and #AltRight, while Stormfront, the oldest Neo-Nazi message board on the web, was full of messages like this one:

"Stephen Bannon: racist, anti-homo, anti-immigrant, anti-jewish, anti-establishment... Sounds perfect. Muhahahaha. The man who will have Trump's ear more than anyone else. Being anti-jewish is not illegal. Nothing you dirty stinking jews can do to keep him out."

We can expect Bannon to work in tandem with VP Elect Pence, another Dominionist, to push the white nationalist, Christian supremacy agenda on every front. These hateful, divisive "patriots" feed on fear and fury, and deliberately seek to turn one American against another, even among their own ranks. They glory in setting Christian against Muslim, white against black, and gay against straight – using their twisted definition of religious freedom as an excuse to cram their hate down the throats of those who disagree.

I ask you all to come together, to stand strong against this horrific battalion of shame being assembled in Washington, and to continue to support MRFF and our fight for equality and freedom from religious oppression. We will not back down, we will not EVER give up.

Memorial Day—Support Constitution the Fallen Vowed to Defend

The religious right hates Article VI of the U.S. Constitution.

It reads in part, "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

Mikey Weinstein has been working for Marines and servivemembers for a long time, fighting to protect their religious beliefs.

Lt. Col. Robert Bateman has a piece in Esquire on Mikey and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

Weinstein, according to the Christian supremacists, is the number one enemy in America.

Give it a read this weekend.

And Happy Memorial Day.

Christian Fundie Puts up House Amendment to Target Mil Civil Rights Leader

This is over the top.

"The extreme fundamentalists have convinced the members of Congress, and specifically the House of Representatives, that Mikey Weinstein and MRFF are anti-Christian activists" for whom they have drafted and introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act 2014, Freethought blog reports.

Read the story at Freethought Blog and the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas) brags at his congressional website on July 13 that "House passes Huelskamp Amendment and Rebukes Anti-Christian Zealot Mikey Weinstein."

Think Christian Dominionists aren't serious.

Think again.

Military Civil Rights Leader Sees Increase in Death Threats

I missed the chance to get together with Mikey Weinstein when he was in Madison, Wisconsin on a book tour.

Security and logistics didn't work out, and I told Mikey I understood and not to worry about it.

I am aware that death threats against Mikey are the norm, coming from Dominionist Christians, Evangelicals, and the type of people whom the late journalist, Ralph McGill termed "rabid, mad-dog minds."

Message from Facebook poster who threatened to
kill civil rights activist, Mikey Weinstein
These people can't bear the work of this proud Jewish man serving our country, and making the U.S. military safe for all servicemembers, as guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, Article VI, Section III.

But some of Mikey's enemies are not garden-variety fundamentalist Christians.

No, these idiots would kill him, if they had the chance. But Mikey knows how to take care of himself.

As a Vietnam combat Marine once told me, advising on how to deal with enemies: "We don't get stressed. We inflict it." Crazy dude knows what he is talking about.

Anyway, writing this piece because a new death threat on Facebook against Mikey pissed me off.

Here's the story:

Vile Death Threats Levelled at Mikey Weinstein on Facebook

The following screenshots (many more threats are on Facebook), taken from Facebook, show the extent of the vile hatred that has been directed towards Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein, Founder and President of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.

Mikey has been given many names by his enemies including “Satan”, “Satan’s lawyer”, “the Antichrist”, “That Godless, Secular Leftist”, “Antagonizer of All Christians”, “Most Dangerous Man in America” and “Field General of the Godless Armies of Satan.” With such hideous slanders and attacks being repeated daily in the Christian fundamentalist press, it comes as no surprise that many have wished death to Mikey and his family.

Please note: while we typically redact the names of those who send us hate mail in respect to privacy concerns, the below threats were made on Facebook in the full knowledge that a public audience would see them.

The following messages from “Becky Williams” were posted to Mikey Weinstein’s Facebook page on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 4, 2013:

Called a Satanist, Mikey Weinstein Makes U.S. Defense Community's Top 100 Most Influential People

100 Most Influential People in U.S. Defence

'Constitutional conscience' of the U.S. military gets end-of-year notice by military press

A civil rights activist has been named as one of the most influential people in the U.S. defense community by editorial staff working at government sector press outlets, collectively comprising the world's largest military newsroom. This inaugural list of the top 100 most influential people is based upon perceived "leadership, innovation, technology and vision" in our country with an annual defense budget of some $740 billion.

Mikey Weinstein, the founder and chief of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, founded the civil rights organization in 2006, and represented and continues to advocate for 10,000s of American servicemen and woman.

Weinstein is an author, an attorney, and has been nominated for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize for the fifth consecutive year, a year seeing Weinstein draw headlines for working for human rights amid death threats and anti-Semitic slurs.

The list "was compiled over five months by more than two dozen reporters" at the Gannett government media’s sector-leading publications: Defense News, Army Times, Air Force Times, Navy Times, Marine Corps Times, Armed Forces Journal and Federal Times.

As reported on its website, the "Military Religious Freedom Foundation is dedicated to ensuring that all "members of the United States Armed Forces fully receive the Constitutional guarantees of religious freedom to which they and all Americans are entitled by virtue of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment."

Weinstein has so disturbed the Christian-Dominion religious infrastructure ingrained in the U.S. military that top serving brass as recently as 2008 publicly accused Weinstein of engaging in a "demonic” agenda," as described by Lieutenant General William “Jerry” Boykin.

Jeff Sharlet in Harper's Magazine has written extensively about the "powerful movement of Christian soldiers concentrated in the officer corps" against whom Weinstein, a committed army of civil libertarians, cadets, veterans, troops and Marines fight.

Writes Sharlet of the dominionists: "They see themselves not as subversives but as spiritual warriors—'ambassadors for Christ in uniform,' according to Officers’ Christian Fellowship; 'government paid missionaries,' according to Campus Crusade’s Military Ministry."

What has the Dominionists and assorted Christian nationalists feeling aggrieved is the effectiveness of Weinstein that these Christian avengers can no longer ignore, along with the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Military Civil Rights Union Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

In the face of fierce attacks by right wing Christian dominionists on the ideal of a secular U.S. military (and an officially secular U.S. government) and the preservation of the constitutional guarantee of no religious test for public office or trust, the Military Religious Freedom Foundation has received the nomination the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize. - Letter nominating the Military Religious Freedom Foundation for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

Via the Military Religious Freedom Foundation

Thorbjørn Jagland
Chairman Nobel Prize Committee

Dear Chairman Jagland and Nobel Peace Prize Committee members:

Clause 3, Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution

In the midst of the present global economic crisis, tensions between nations and peoples have all-too-frequently erupted in horrific violence. Much of this violence has emanated from those who have sought to justify their atrocities by means of theology. They advance their dark agendas under the false pretext of divine mandate, the fulfillment of “End Times” eschatology, neo-“Crusader” aspirations, or a twisted and falsified conception of the sacred Islamic duty of “Jihad.” U.S. Air Force Academy honor graduate Michael L. “Mikey” Weinstein initially founded the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF; www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org) in 2005 to fight back against religious discrimination within the United States Armed Forces. Weinstein’s overriding goal focuses on the protection of the “wall” separating church and state in the U.S. military, a legal barrier with foundations in the United States Constitution which is being worn away through a process of attrition by homegrown religious extremists. The discrimination faced by Weinstein, as well as that faced by his military academy graduate children, is the clear result of an ever-expanding Christian Fundamentalist hegemonic foothold within the U.S. military.

Mikey Weinstein’s fearlessly outspoken approach has resulted in MRFF standing as the sole beacon of civil rights protection for servicemembers who have encountered pervasive prejudice, bigotry, and related horrid civil rights abuses against their religious liberties resulting from their expressed religious faith (or lack thereof). These incidents have included forced attendance at Christian prayer ceremonies and events, hazing on religious grounds, and persecution that has run the gamut from routine belittlement to forms of “witch-hunting.” These incidents are horrifyingly redolent of the darkest periods in the history of the United States. In a shocking testament to this intolerable and unjust environment, over 30,000 active duty United States marines, sailors, airmen, soldiers, veterans, and civilian personnel have swollen the ranks of MRFF’s clientele. This shockingly-large roster of clients includes all individuals who have contacted or retained the services of the foundation. Eleven of these clients have been Killed in Action, as was a valued core MRFF Advisory Board Member. Among these tens of thousands of aggrieved servicemembers, the vast majority – nearly 96% – are Christians (Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox) who face persecution on account of their perceived lack of fundamentalist evangelical zeal.

The trauma of prolonged warfare is taking a heavy toll on troop morale, leading to devastating suicide rates among active duty service members and veterans of foreign conflicts. These stresses constitute an all-too-common consequence of all war, and are hardly isolated to servicemembers and veterans alone. However, this trauma also has a deleterious effect among civilians, and leads to the deterioration of families. In September 2012, the U.S. Army even held its first “Stand-down” to address the suicide epidemic. Shockingly, soldiers were then forced to undergo a coerced mass Christian prayer ceremony. Needless to say, this is a manner of proselytizing that is perniciously predatory, and deals grievous blows to the health of American society as a whole.

What Weinstein and MRFF are fighting against is nothing less than an evangelical fundamentalist coup within the United States Armed Forces. This Christian extremist fifth column has its roots in a Cold War-era alliance between the U.S. Department of Defense and militant outfits such as the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade and the Church of the Christian Crusade. However, successive generations of military leadership have preserved this alliance far beyond its original Cold War/anti-communist shelf life. The result has been a U.S. military that is steeped in a highly caustic brew of sectarianism, domineering religious bigotry, and an arrogant, dehumanizing attitude towards the civilian populations of the regions where the U.S. finds itself militarily engaged.

The United States’ proclaimed goals of facilitating dialogue between civilizations and cultures, while securing global peace in the process, are starkly undermined by a culture within its armed forces that equates implements of death and mass destruction with the “soul-saving” tools of Christian missionaries. This ultra-nationalist, deluded undercurrent within the armed forces is precisely what Mr. Weinstein and MRFF have committed to fighting. MRFF utilizes all manners of media tools as well as federal and state litigation to forthrightly confront every manifestation of “Dominionism” that has arisen from within the ranks of the U.S. military, as well as its halls of academia.

Indeed, MRFF, with Mr. Weinstein at its helm, has uncovered the unabashed, brazen display of militant religious regalia and iconography within the United States military. In many cases, MRFF has halted their usage after shining a bright constitutional spotlight on the dubious legality of associating church with state.

Such was the case when, in this past Spring of 2012, Beaufort, South Carolina-based Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 (VMFA-122) changed its name from the “Werewolves” to the “Crusaders.” Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Wade Wiegel showed his astounding historical ignorance when stating that “The name change is a reflection of our heritage… [it is] not politically incorrect”! As far as the “political correctness” of such an inflammatory move is concerned, we’ll leave that up to others to judge. However, any criteria for “correctness” should take into account the fact that in the Arab and Muslim collective memory, “Crusader” is no meaningless appellation. To Arabs and Muslims, “Crusader” is synonymous with a genocidal campaign of colonial banditry, occupation, and mass slaughter initiated by Christians from the West. As Mikey Weinstein correctly noted at the time, “The Crusades serve as a hideous testament to the noxious danger embodied by the foreboding alloy of weaponized theology.” What purpose could such a provocation serve, besides circulating this “weaponized theology” throughout the U.S. military?

“Weaponized theology” is an apt description of the so-called “Jesus Rifles” and “Jesus Nukes,” phrases which conflict with the true gospel of Christ as understood by countless generations of faithful Christians. However, under the auspices of highly ranked evangelical fundamentalist Christians within the top echelons of the U.S. military, both Jesus Rifles and Jesus Nukes have become an absurd reality. In January 2010, MRFF uncovered the fact that military contractor Trijicon was branding its scopes with New Testament Biblical citations. MRFF pressure led to the provision of kits by the Department of Defense meant to scrub off the engravings. Unfortunately, as of October 2012, many of these rifle scopes still carry the citations. This travesty sends a clear message to the United States’ ostensible allies in the Muslim world that a nontrivial number of U.S. service personnel indeed see their tools of death as a means to advance a missionary agenda. In July 2011, MRFF exposed decades-old official USAF presentation materials used to train countless Air Force nuclear missile launch officers on the ethics of nuclear warfare by citing New Testament verses and Christian “Just War” theory. These wretched presentations, known colloquially within the Air Force as the “Jesus Loves Nukes” speech, were swiftly pulled from USAF curriculum within days of their worldwide exposure by MRFF, and a complete audit of other training materials was ordered. However, it is unknown how many active-duty Air Force officers, having been entrusted with the most destructive weapons known to humankind, believe that their fundamentalist Christian faith must guide whether they launch a nuclear missile or not.

There have been countless other examples where MRFF advocacy has played a crucial role in stemming the tide of evangelical fundamentalist zeal within and throughout the U.S. military. From the unconstitutional endorsement of Islamophobic, warmongering, so-called “charities” such as Rev. Franklin Graham’s Operation Christmas Child to the extension of invitations to dyed-in-the-wool Christian militarists like Gen. “Jerry” Boykin, Mr. Weinstein and MRFF have ceaselessly struggled to regain the footing of a U.S. military that seems positively spellbound by belligerent religiosity. MRFF also managed to successfully have the official insignia of the four service branches removed from so-called “Military Bibles” filled with fundamentalist addenda. For this reason, Mr. Weinstein, his family, and MRFF are almost daily in receipt of vile hate mail and death threats, many of which cite the same “fire and brimstone” imprecatory curses and biblical citations.

Mikey Weinstein’s fervent commitment has led to concrete results, including the introduction of guidelines meant to rein in the rampant abuse of commission that comes in the form of Christian fundamentalist agitation in the ranks of the armed forces. MRFF pressure, and a string of embarrassing incidents uncovered by the Foundation, directly culminated in the issuance of Air Force Instruction 1-1 Standards of Conduct. This AFI 1-1 document requires total mandatory compliance on penalty of potential adverse criminal action, including courts martial, under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The document requires non-chaplain officers and supervisors to “avoid the actual or apparent use of their position to promote their personal religious beliefs to their subordinates or to extend preferential treatment for any religion.” This new Air Force directive gives teeth to the explicit constitutional proscription of unauthorized proselytization or endorsements of religious organizations.

Mr. Weinstein has received numerous honors for his efforts to advance MRFF’s humanitarian civil rights cause. The foremost Jewish publication, The Forward, named Weinstein one of 2006’s “Forward 50” for his contributions in the sphere of “Ideas & Activism.” Weinstein has also received the prestigious honor of the Jews for Racial and Economic Justice’s Rabbi Marshall T. Meyer Risk-Taker Award in 2008. In 2010, Weinstein received the Anne Froehlich Political Courage Award from the Pacific Palisades Democratic Club in Los Angeles, California, joining the prestigious ranks of past awardees such as Ambassador Joseph Wilson IV, former talk show host Phil Donahue, and Daniel Ellsberg of “Pentagon Papers” fame. MRFF has received four total nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, for award years 2010, 2011, and 2012. Mr. Weinstein’s list of honors was capped in November of 2011 when he received the inaugural “Person of the Year” award from Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

The ongoing efforts of Mr. Weinstein’s organization have earned MRFF acclaim as a trusted go-to source for aggrieved servicemembers seeking redress for the affronts they’ve been forced to tolerate in silence. MRFF is the only civil rights organization dealing solely with issues of religious freedom, tolerance, and respect within the U.S. military for both “faith” and “no faith” adherents.

The United States Armed Forces possesses the largest arsenals of both conventional and unconventional weaponry known to mankind, and is ominously more than capable of bringing about the “end times” level of destruction that many evangelical fundamentalist Christians excitedly await. Furthermore, considering the United States military’s global presence and ability to project force, issues that affect the U.S. military truly concern the entire world. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation’s ongoing vital work to prevent religious extremism from turning our military into a nuclear weapons-fueled 21st century Crusade continues to concretely advance the cause of universal world peace, and promote a universal fraternity between nations.

In consideration of the innumerable accomplishments and important ongoing tasks that this civil rights organization has undertaken to guard against religious extremism and ensure the basic human right of religious freedom in the U.S. Armed Forces, both domestically and in all nations where they are present, it is my honor and privilege to hereby submit my nomination of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

Sincerely, [Name redacted]

Weinstein's Right on Marine Scout Sniper-NAZI Icon

Marine Scout Snipers pose with NAZI Icon

Update: Panetta calls for new probe into Marines posing with Nazi SS logo

Members of the U.S. Marine Corps 1st Recon Battalion, Charlie Company operating in the Sangin district, Afghanistan felt the need—for some incomprehensible reason—to use the Ancient Runic alphabet letters adopted by Heinrich Himmler's Schutzstaffel, the SS, as their own icon, placed next to the American flag in a picture for which they posed in September 2010.

Heinrich Himmler's Schutzstaffel, the SS

You fucked up. Renounce it and move on.

When you felt the need to mark your rifles with the SS symbol, you fucked up again. Renounce it and move on.

No one expects you to read Norman Cohn's analyses of the NAZIs in the middle of this bull-shit war known as Operation Enduring Freedom, especially your unit. No one expects you to know all of the particular idiocies of NAZI iconography

Jesus Christ, do you know what Himmler's SS means? Seriously, I would recommend no dishonorable discharge, not loss of anything as reportedly the U.S. military has already dealt with your imbecility internally.

"Those people. Those millions of people. I never knew it would come to that."
—"It came to that the first time you sentenced a man to death you knew to be innocent."
Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)
Why would you use the ancient runic alphabet letters used by Heinrich Himmler's Schutzstaffel, the SS? Deliver a message to Islam that your unit is genocide-capable?

But think. Read the late Norman Cohn's The Pursuit of the Millennium: Revolutionary Millenarians and Mystical Anarchists of the Middle Ages (1957) and Warrant for Genocide: The Myth of the Jewish World Conspiracy and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion (1970).

The NAZIs did not just commit historical atrocities; they were idiots with whom no decent human being would want to associate himself.

Mother Jones reports:
Walter Plywaski, a survivor of the Lodz ghetto and Auschwitz concentration camp in World War II who later became a US citizen and Air Force veteran, expressed disgust at the Marines' behavior. "The photographs below roil my intestines and break my heart beyond words to express," he wrote in an email to Weinstein. "I wish I could really believe that these sniper teams innocently combined the view of the United States flag with the central symbol of the murderous SS!"
I had the pleasure of many exchanges with Walter over the last few years. Think he would be proud of a public renouncement by your unit. But renounce NAZIs for your selves.

As for Norman Cohn, I'll break it down for you: All the NAZIs required of the population and NAZI Party members is a “mood of passive compliance” as Hitler’s Holocaust coursed through Europe as he promised a return to “traditional values” and security for good German families,

MRFF Statement on SS Banner Flying Alongside U.S. Flag in Afghanistan

Marine sniper's rifle-stock sporting
Himmler's Schutzstaffel, the SS Icon
The Military Religious Freedom Foundation is absolutely sickened by the disgusting images of members of the U.S. Marine Corps 1st Recon Battalion, Charlie Company, proudly posing in front of the U.S. flag juxtaposed alongside a symbol associated with the unspeakable horrors of the Nazi Holocaust, the genocide of religious minorities throughout Europe, and the forces of white supremacist racial hatred.

Marine sniper's rifle-stock sporting Himmler's Schutzstaffel, the SS Icon The fact that United States service personnel were caught proudly posing with the emblem of the Nazi SS, which symbolizes the vile ideology of Hitlerian fascism, sends a menacing signal to religious minorities within the United States Armed Forces. The symbol’s usage conveys a message that the U.S. Military is an organization within which white supremacists can feel at home, free to espouse their murderous ideology and proudly don their symbols of hatred.

This brazen display of a symbol which is synonymous with death squads, gas chambers, and brutal occupation reflects a sociopathic, marauding attitude which violently jars with the supposed "nation-building" efforts which the NATO forces have embarked upon. It exacerbates the anti-Americanism felt by the people of the region who we claim to be helping in the context of a UN-mandated, NATO-led security mission.
Closer look at Marine scout sniper, right, with an "SS"
marked on his rifle in this 2004 photo
In short, this shameful display of SS "lightning bolts" by U.S. service personnel enrages our regional allies, emboldens the extremist Islamist forces with whom we are contending, and eviscerates good order, morale, and discipline within the U.S. Marine Corps. The Military Religious Freedom Foundation immediately calls for the leadership of the United States Military to condemn this stomach-turning display without equivocation or delay and severely punish ALL of those responsible.

On Mikey Weinstein

Clause 3, Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution
Mikey Weinstein, founder and president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF), keeps up the fight for religious freedom.

Latest note of Christian love is below from an e-mail. It's a step up from death threats.

Memo affirms religious neutrality of U.S. military
Mikey Wineshit you defile our neighborhood with your little road sign? the filth of your Christ hating horde of leftist jew-cowards and Christian pretenders is sad for America
The good Christian refers to a MRFF billboard depicting the memo of General Norton Schwartz, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

Quoting from Gen Schwartz' watershed edict on “Maintaining Government Neutrality Regarding Religion,” the billboard was sited in Colorado Springs where the controversial U.S. Air Force Academy is located.

The Academy has a history of anti-Semitism and official embracing of Christian Dominionism, which led Mikey Weinstein, a former cadet, to found the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF).

USAF Academy Superintendent Michael Gould has slow-walked the dissemination of the memo in keeping with his history of defending what Gould apparentally regards as encroachments onto his Christian territory.

MRFF took this "extraordinary action in direct reaction to USAF Academy Superintendent Michael Gould’s astonishing refusal to distribute Gen. Schwartz’s directive to all Academy personnel under his command."

USAF Chief Affirms No Religious Test Policy for Military

Clause 3, Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution

In the wake of an exclusive report in Truthout [Leopold] last July revealing that for two decades the Air Force used Bible passages, religious imagery and NAZI citations to instruct nuclear missile officers on the morality of launching nuclear weapons, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton A. Schwartz issued a policy memorandum sent Tuesday to all major commands that affirms the No Establishment Clause, the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment, as well as Clause 3, Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution specifically prohibiting a religious test for public office and trust.

The policy is a victory against the efforts of a pervasive force in the military, political-religious dominionism, a Chistitian nationalist movement seeking to institute its version of authoritarian Christianity, that endorses theocratic visions of "biblical law," codified in major spheres of American society, most troubling in the U.S. military."

Mikey Weinstein, the President and Founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation that works to ensure religious freedom for all U.S. service members broke the story with writer, Jason Leopold, with a religiously-oriented PowerPoint training presentation and Air Force documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Weinstein, perhaps dominionism's most visible enemy for his dedication to civil rights and pluralism, is known as the "constitutional conscience of the U.S. military," and is recognized as the MRFF site notes as "the undisputed leader of the national movement to restore the obliterated wall separating church and state in the most technologically lethal organization ever created by humankind: the United States armed forces," a designation that brings his family, friends and Weinstein routine death threats, or mundanely prayers that he be killed or consigned to hell.

Weinstein reacted to Gen. Schwartz' memorandum, "Maintaining Government Neutrality Regarding Religion" with the following statement:
General Schwartz deserves significant kudos and comprehensive congratulations for being THE most senior Pentagon official to date to ever send this strong a mandate of Constitutional religious compliance to our United States armed forces members. While MRFF wishes that such a letter had been sent by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force a very long time ago, the old adage 'better late than never' most certainly applies. While this letter may not be a home run, it is a damn good line drive single to potentially start a rally of Constitutional religious freedom compliance, which has been scandalously lacking in the entire Defense Department for decades. Gen. Schwartz has the U.S. Air Force at least now 'talking the talk.' Whether the USAF can 'walk the walk' will depend upon many factors, not the least of which is whether ANYONE in the Air Force is EVER punished for violating its clear mandates of Constitutional recognition for BOTH the No Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause of the Bill of Rights' First Amendment. To that end, we must all remember that while the First Commandment says, 'You can't have any other Gods before Me,' the First Amendment says, 'Oh yes you can!'
Below is the text of Gen. Schwartz' memorandum.

MEMORANDUM FOR ALMAJCOM-FOA-DRU/CC

FROM: HQ USAF/CC
1670 Air Force Pentagon
Washington, DC 20330-1670

SUBJECT: Maintaining Government Neutrality Regarding Religion

Leaders at all levels must balance Constitutional protections for an individual’s free exercise of religion or other personal beliefs and its prohibition against governmental establishment of religion. For example, they must avoid the actual or apparent use of their position to promote their personal religious beliefs to their subordinates or to extend preferential treatment for any religion. Commanders or supervisors who engage in such behavior may cause members to doubt their impartiality and objectivity. The potential result is a degradation of the unit’s morale, good order, and discipline.

Chaplain Corps programs, including activities such as religious studies, faith sharing, and prayer meetings, are vital to commanders’ support of individual Airmen’s needs and provide opportunities for the free exercise of religion. Although commanders are responsible for these programs they must refrain from appearing to officially endorse religion generally or any particular religion. Therefore, I expect chaplains, not commanders, to notify Airmen of Chaplain Corps programs.

Our chaplains are trained to provide advice to leadership on matters related to the free exercise of religion and to help commanders care for all of their people, regardless of their beliefs. If you have concerns involving the preservation of government neutrality regarding religious beliefs, consult with your chaplain and staff judge advocate before you act.

Christian Jihad—Terror Attacks Like Norway’s Are in the U.S. Now, and They’ll Get Worse

Update: Southern Poverty Law Center warns of domestic threat. "The problem is just as grave in our country. For the first time, hate groups here have topped 1,000, and the potential for widespread damage is mounting. Just this year, a neo-Nazi was arrested for planting a bomb that could have killed hundreds along an MLK Day parade route in Spokane."
- Morris Dees
Founder, Southern Poverty Law Center

Gov. Scott Walker says he has an inside track on God, guiding him to slash funding for public schools, obstruct citizens from voting, take away community control of government and have himself a jolly "last hurrah before [h]e dropped the bomb" on Wisconsin workers, making common cause with the religious right which envisions a quasi-feudal society as the will of God.

Crazy? Sure, it's Scott Walker.

And of course Walker's axis' powers like the Koch brothers and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) whose political front is dismantling the social insurance of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

In Ryan's case, his guiding lights are an obscure author, Ayn Rand ['Social Security and Medicare for me, but not for thee'], and the not-so-obscure insurance industry.
Wisconsin citizens fight back
Political assassinations, mass murder, terrorism, massive misogyny, demonization of an entire religion are the norm in America NOW as "tens of millions of Americans, lumped into a diffuse and fractious movement known as the Christian right, have begun to dismantle the intellectual and scientific rigor of the Enlightenment," noted Chris Hedges.

I recommend C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy (Jeff Sharlet. Little, Brown and Company; 2010), and American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War On America (Chris Hedges. Free Press, 2007) as critical works chronicling this grave and gathering threat.

By Frank Schaeffer in AlterNet

The reality is that the debt ceiling confrontation is by, for and the result of America's evangelical Christian control of the Republican Party. There is a growing movement in America that equates godliness with hatred of our government -- in fact, hatred of our country.

The Norwegian police on Saturday charged a 32-year-old man, whom they identified as a Christian fundamentalist with right-wing connections, over the bombing of a government center and a shooting attack on a nearby island that together left at least 91 people dead.

In my new book "Sex, Mom and God" I predicted just such an action. I predicted that right wing Christians will unleash terror here in America too. I predict that they will copy Islamic extremists, and may eventually even make common cause with them.
There is a growing movement in America that equates godliness with hatred of our government in fact hatred of our country as fallen and evil because we allow women choice, gays to marry, have a social safety net, and allow immigration from other cultures and non-white races.

[Lieutenant General William “Jerry” Boykin publicly accused military civil rights activist, Mikey Weinstein, of engaging in a "demonic” agenda against the forces of Jesus Christ at an event held at Fort Bragg in August 2008. Whether or not Mikey Weinstein is working with Satan, he is the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF)and is fighting Christian ministers and their military allies who are working to transform the American military into a force for Jesus Christ, even as its allies rave against government, gays and non-whites. Consistency has never been the trademark of the irrational mind.]

According to the Guardian newspaper, the killer wrote:
"Today's Protestant church is a joke," he wrote in an online post in 2009. "Priests in jeans who march for Palestine and churches that look like minimalist shopping centres. I am a supporter of an indirect collective conversion of the Protestant church back to the Catholic."
It seems Anders Behring Breivik longed for a "pure" and ultra conservative religion. He was a man of religious conviction, no liberals with their jeans need apply! Liberals beware.

Norway is just a first taste of what will happen here on a larger scale.

A HISTORY of VIOLENT ACTION

There is a history to the far right, religious right extremism on the rise today, extremism so extreme that in its congressional manifestation it is risking the good faith and credit of the US in the debt calling fiasco. The Tea Party activists also want purity of doctrine.

My family was part of the far right/violent right's rise in the 1970s and 80s when we helped create the "pro-life" movement come into existence that in the end spawned the killers of abortion providers. These killers were literally doing what we'd called for.

The terror unleashed on Norway - and the terror now unleashed by the Tea Party through Congress as it holds our economy hostage to extremist "economic" theories that want to destroy our ability to function -- is the sort of white, Christian; far right terror America can expect more of.

THE "CHRISTIAN BROTHERHOOD"

Call this the ultimate "Tea Party" type "answer" to secularism, modernity, and above all our hated government. Call this the Christian Brotherhood. From far right congress people, to far right gun-toting terror in Norway and here at home, our own Western version of the Taliban is on the rise.

Foreigners, visitors from another planet and Americans living in a bubble of reasonable or educated people might not know this but the reality is that the debt ceiling confrontation is by, for and the result of America's evangelical Christian control of the Republican Party.

It is the ultimate expression of an alternate reality, one that has the mistrust of the US government as its bedrock "faith," second only to faith in Jesus.

To understand why an irrational self-defeating action like destroying the credit of the USA might seem like the right thing to do you have to understand two things: that the Republican Party is now the party of religious fanatics and that these fanatics -- people like Michele Bachmann -- don't want to work within our system, they want to bring it down along the lines of so-called Christian "Reconstruction." (See my book for a full account of what this is.)

In the scorched-earth era of the "health care reform debates" of 2009 and beyond, Evangelicals seemed to believe that Jesus commanded that all hospitals (and everything else) should be run by corporations for profit, just because corporations weren't the evil government. The right even decided that it was "normal" for the state to hand over its age-old public and patriotic duties to private companies -- even for military operations ("contractors"), prisons, health care, public transport, and all the rest.

PRIVATE "FACTS"

The Religious Right/Far Right et al. favored private "facts," too.

They claimed that global warming wasn't real. They asserted this because scientists (those same agents of Satan who insisted that evolution was real) were the ones who said human actions were changing the climate. Worse, the government said so, too!

"Global warming is a left-wing plot to take away our freedom!"

"Amtrak must make a profit!"

There is an indirect but deadly connection between the "intellectual" fig-leaf providers/leaders like my late father and periodic upheavals like the loony American Right's sometimes-violent reaction to the election of Barack Obama, killings in Norway and what the Tea Party wing of the Republican Party is about to do to us in forcing a default on our loans, and thus destroying the US economy in a way bin Laden could only have dreamed of doing.

No, your average member of some moronic gun toting Michigan militia is not reading books by my late father Francis Schaeffer where he called for the overthrow of the government because of Roe v Wade and the legalization of abortion. Nor have they heard of people like Robert George. And the killer in Norway may or may not have read my father's books.

But Michele Bachmann is reading my father's books. And she was trained in far right Reconstructionist theory at the Oral Roberts law school by one of Dad's followers.

Bachmann says she got into politics because of reading my father's work. And she is one of his extremist followers.

Non-Evangelicals with far right agendas like Robert George (I'll introduce him to you in a moment) have cashed in on the Evangelicals' like Bachmann's willingness to lend their numbers and influence to one "moral" anti-American crusade after another, or rather I should say, to one political crusade after another masquerading as moral crusades.

"RESPECTABLE" FAR RIGHT "INTELLECTUALS"

For instance, conservative Roman Catholic Princeton University Professor of Jurisprudence Robert George is an antiabortion, anti-Obama, anti-gay-rights, and anti-stem-cell-research "profamily" activist, and he has found ways to effectively carry on the far right Reconstructionist agenda while denying any formal connection to it and taking the intellectual high road.

Take George's brainchild: the "Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience."

This was published in 2009 as an anti-Obama manifesto, and many far right Evangelical leaders signed on.

The "Manhattan Declaration" reads:
"We will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act . . . nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family. We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar's. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God's."
In case you've never heard of George, he's been a one-man "brain trust" for the Religious Right, Glenn Beck, and the Far Right of the Republican Party as well as for the ultraconservative wing of the Roman Catholic Church. Here's how the New York Times introduced him to its readers:
"[Robert George] has parlayed a 13th-century Catholic philosophy [the natural law theory] into real political influence. Glenn Beck, the Fox News talker and a big George fan, likes to introduce him as "one of the biggest brains in America," or, on one broadcast, "Superman of the Earth." Karl Rove told me he considers George a rising star on the right and a leading voice in persuading President George W. Bush to restrict embryonic stem-cell research. . . . Newt Gingrich called him "an important and growing influence" on the conservative movement, especially on matters like abortion and marriage. "If there really is a vast right-wing conspiracy," the conservative Catholic journal Crisis concluded a few years ago, "its leaders probably meet in George's kitchen.""
GOVERNMENT IS THE ENEMY

It's a question of legitimacy and illegitimacy.

What the Religious Right, including the Religious Right's Roman Catholic and Protestant enablers, did was contribute to a climate in which the very legitimacy of our government--is questioned as part of religious faith itself.

The "Manhattan Declaration" called laws with which its signers disagreed "edicts," thereby conjuring up images of dictators handing down oppressive rules, rather than legitimately elected democratic bodies passing legislation. In other words, when the Right lost in the democratic process, "other means" to undermine the law were encouraged. This is the language of revolution, not democracy.

The Far Right intellectual enablers began by questioning abortion rights, gay rights, school prayer rulings, and so forth. What they ended up doing was to help foster a climate in which--in the eyes of a dangerous and growing (mostly white lower class undereducated gun-toting) minority--the very legitimacy of the U.S. government was called into question, sometimes in paranoid generalities, but often with ridiculous specificity: for instance, in the persistent lie that President Obama was not a citizen or was a Muslim or that the Federal Reserve and/or United Nations were somehow involved in a plot to "take away our freedoms" or that sensible gun control equaled "tyranny."

TERROR FOR CHRIST

It was in the context of delegitimizing our government that actions by domestic terrorists like Timothy McVeigh became thinkable. In 1993 McVeigh told a reporter, "The government is continually growing bigger and more powerful and the people need to prepare to defend themselves against government control."

Change a word or two and his words could have been lifted from my father's 1981 book A Christian Manifesto, or for that matter a few decades later, from statements by the so-called Tea Party or those by Michele Bachmann, or Robert George or his follower Glenn Beck.

In my father's book he called for the overthrow of the US government unless non-violent ways were found to overturn Roe v Wade. He compared America to Nazi Germany.

Note the ominous rhetorical shadow Dad's book cast over a benighted and divided American future, a future that produced the climate of hate that eventually spawned the murder of abortion providers such as Dr. George Tiller in Wichita in 2009 and the threat of destroying America's credit in an effort to literally defund the USA.

Here's a bit from Manifesto on how the government was "taking away" our country and turning it over to Liberals, codenamed by Dad as "this total humanistic way of thinking":
Man carrying a rifle at protest against Pres Obama in Phoenix, Arizona in August 2009, some six months before the massacre in Tucson and the attempted assassination of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords
"The law, and especially the courts, is the vehicle to force this total humanistic way of thinking upon the entire population ... ."

And this:

"Simply put, the Declaration of Independence states that the people, if they find that their basic rights are being systematically attacked by the state, have a duty to try and change that government, and if they cannot do so, to abolish it."

Then this:

"There does come a time when force, even physical force, is appropriate. . . . A true Christian in Hitler's Germany and in the occupied countries should have defied the false and counterfeit state. This brings us to a current issue that is crucial for the future of the church in the United States, the issue of abortion. . . . It is time we consciously realize that when any office commands what is contrary to God's law it abrogates its authority. And our loyalty to the God who gave this law then requires that we make the appropriate response in that situation."

In other words, Dad's followers were told that (1) force is a legitimate weapon to use against an evil government; (2) America was like Hitler's Germany--because of legal abortion and of the forcing of "Humanism" on the population--and thus intrinsically evil; and (3) whatever would have been the "appropriate response" to stop Hitler was now appropriate to do here in America to stop our government, which Dad had just branded a "counterfeit state."

EXTREMISM IS NEXT TO GODLINESS

To understand the extremism coming from the right, the fact that there are members of Congress who seem to be genuinely mentally unhinged leading the charge on the debt ceiling, you need to understand that this hatred of all things government has theological roots that have nothing to do with facts.

Theology is -- by nature -- not about reason but about faith. If God's will is to be served then so be it if America is plunged into chaos! This debt ceiling fiasco is just another chapter in the "culture" wars.

The extreme language of Evangelical/"pro-life" rebellion has now been repackaged in the debt ceiling showdown. It is the language of religion pitted against facts.

And the anti-government charge is being led by people who are either true believers, thus unable to reason, or people catering to the true believers so that they can remain in the good books of the Tea Party, which is nothing more than the Evangelical far right repackaged and renamed.

Some people took the next step. The night of December 14, 2008, Bruce Turnidge was in handcuffs and sitting next to an FBI agent in Turnidge's farmhouse in Oregon. He was ranting about the "need" for militias and cursing the election of an African American president. Hours earlier, his son, Joshua, had been arrested for allegedly causing a fatal bomb explosion.

"Bruce started talking about the Second Amendment and citizens' rights to carry firearms," said George Chamberlin, the FBI agent. "Bruce talked at length that the government should fear the people and that the people should not fear the government."

In February 2010, a little more than a year after Obama's inauguration, Joseph Stack, a fifty-three-year-old software engineer, piloted a plane into an IRS building in Austin, Texas, and killed one man and injured several others.

Before killing himself, Stack posted an online suicide note railing against the federal government and expressing grievances similar to those Dad had enumerated.

A Facebook group celebrating Stack had thousands of members sign on almost instantly after he was "martyred for our freedoms," as one contributor called it. The site featured the Gadsden flag (the flag with the logo "Don't Tread On Me") and these words: "Finally an American man took a stand against our tyrannical government that no longer follows the constitution and turned its back on its founding fathers and the beliefs this country was founded on."

In March 2010 the so-called Hutaree Militia, a right-wing, biblically inspired fundamentalist group, was alleged to have hatched a plot to kill police officers. Members of this outfit had planned attacks on police officers as a way of acting out their hatred for the government as well as a way to launch the civil chaos "predicted" in so-called End Times biblical prophecies. The day the plotters were arrested, I checked their online homepage. Here's what I found as their mission statement (misspellings in the original post, which has since been taken down, as has the site):

"As Christians we all are a part of the Souls of the Body of Christ, the one true church of Christ. . . . This is the belief of the Hutaree soldier, as should the belief of all followers in Christ be."

THE BLACK MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE DRIVES THE RIGHT TO INSANITY

Following the election of our first black president, the "politics" of the Evangelical, Jewish, Roman Catholic, and Mormon Far Right was not the politics of a loyal opposition, but rather the instigation of revolution, which was first and best expressed by Rush Limbaugh when even before President Obama took office he said, "I hope Obama fails."

To the old-fashioned conservative mantra "Big government doesn't work," the newly radicalized Evangelicals (and their Roman Catholic and Mormon cobelligerents) added "The U.S. government is evil!"

And the very same community--Protestant American Evangelicals--who had once been the bedrock supporters of public education, and voted for such moderate and reasonable men as President Dwight Eisenhower, became the enemies of not only the public schools but also of anything in the (nonmilitary) public sphere "run by the government."

As they opened new institutions (proudly outside the mainstream), the Jesus Victims doing this "reclaiming" cast themselves in the role of persecuted exiles.

What they never admitted was that they were self-banished from mainstream institutions, not only because the Evangelicals' political views on social issues conflicted with most people's views, but also because Evangelicals (and other conservative religionists) found themselves holding the short end of the intellectual stick.

And yet having "dropped out" (to use a 1960s phrase), the Evangelicals nevertheless kept on demanding that regarding "moral" and "family" matters the society they'd renounced nonetheless had to conform to their beliefs.

CHRISTIAN JIHAD

Another Far Right Roman Catholic ideologue (and also an academic) even wrote a book calling on Christians, Jews, and Muslims to join together in a jihad against the secular West. In Ecumenical Jihad: Ecumenism and the Culture War a former friend of mine, Peter Kreeft (a professor of philosophy at Boston College), called for "ecumenical jihad."

I met with Kreeft several times in my home in the 1980s and early 1990s while he was developing his "jihadist" ideas.

Kreeft's was not a plea for blowing people up, and his book was published pre-9/11.

His book was based on the fact that many believers in Roman Catholicism, Evangelical Protestantism, and Islam (at least in their fundamentalist forms) rejected the sexual revolution of the 1960s. Homosexuality is out, sex education is evil, and so on. Kreeft called on all believers to unite to overthrow "secularism" in the same anti-secular spirit that Robert George channeled a few years later when trying to undermine the Obama administration through his brainchild, the "Manhattan Declaration."

Kreeft called for an "alliance" of fundamentalist Protestants, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims to prosecute a culture war against what he viewed as the Western cultural elite. Ecumenical Jihad was dedicated to Richard John Neuhaus, the late Roman Catholic convert priest, and to Charles Colson (who later teamed up with George to author the "Manhattan Declaration").

The groups Kreeft, Colson, and Neuhaus had in mind to "bring together" in an ecumenical jihad were alienated Evangelicals, Orthodox Jews, and conservative Roman Catholics, to which Kreeft added Muslims (not that any actually signed on to his program as far as I know). These groups did not share each other's theology, but they had a deeper link: anger at the "victimhood" imposed on them by modernity.

Kreeft and Neuhaus were calling abortion murder. Thus, the logic of their argument was that of my father's, too: The U.S. government was enabling murder and was thus disparaged as a "regime," even a "counterfeit state," that needed to be overthrown.

A WILLINGNESS TO DESTROY AMERICA IN ORDER TO "SAVE" IT

George and Colson and the others who wrote and then signed the "Manhattan Declaration" (like Kreeft before them) also called for fundamentalists to unite if need be for civil disobedience to stop the U.S. government from passing laws that did not comply with their religious "values" and/or to undermine those laws if they were enacted.

So if the U.S. government legalized gay marriage and thus "compelled" all Americans (including church groups) to recognize gay men and women's civil rights, the government need no longer be obeyed when those laws affected religious people who disagreed with them. The "Manhattan Declaration" called believers to "not comply." And just as Neuhaus dismissed the U.S. government as a "regime"--and my father did the same when saying the government was a "counterfeit state"--George and his co - signers also used dismissive and demeaning language about the U.S. government.

In a country awash in weapons and wallowing in the rhetoric of rebellion against an "evil" government, sporadic outbursts of murder tinged with political overtones seem as inevitable as they seem horribly "normal."

It doesn't seem like much of a stretch to foresee a day when a "secessionist" group and/or members of some "militia"--let alone one lone individual--will use their U.S. passports, white skins, and solid- citizen standing as a cover for importing a weapon of mass destruction to "liberate" the rest of us from our federal government's "tyranny" and/or to "punish" some city like New York, known as the U.S. "abortion capital" or San Francisco as the place that "those gays have taken over." And the possibility of an assassination in the same vein is a never-ending threat.

What we fear most from Islamist terrorists will be unleashed here as it was in Norway.

Terror is on the way on the way from our very own Christian and/or Libertarian "Tea Party" type activists inspired by right wing "Christian" intellectuals and political leaders like Bachmann who - after the killing starts -- will then disown them and express horror at their actions, actions that are in fact the logical extension of the anti-government rhetoric spewing from Congress and the religious right.
