Newspaper sponsors harassment and enemies' list database

Though no one publicly questions the validity of the petition to recall Scott Walker anymore, the GOP-linked Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel is sponsoring a searchable database to see who wants to recall Republicans.

The database does the work of right-wing parties and assorted wackos who cannot stand Wisconsin citizens voting GOP politicians out of office, per the Wisconsin constitution recall provisions.

A hostile employer, a neighbor, or a violent criminal can use the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's (MJS) system to locate a name and address on the Journal-Sentinel's database and make decisions based on the list.

Already, there have been numerous death threats, acts of harassment and assaults made against recall volunteers and citizens, and people who signed the recall petition.

The database is highly user-friendly and faster and more reliable than another GOP online, recall database.

The MJS piece announcing the database today does not include reference to or the language of Article XIII, Section 12 of the Wisconsin Constitution, enshrining the right of Wisconsin citizens to recall elected officials when voters deem it appropriate.

Nor, does the MJS address concerns about crimes and assaults to civil liberties that might be made on the basis of the online list.

The MJS had taken an anti-recall Scott Walker editorial stance throughout the Walker administration.

The MJS corporate parent company, Journal Communications, Inc., took a pro-recall editorial stance when Scott Walker worked for the recall of Sen. Kohl and other democrats, and during Walker's efforts to recall the Milwaukee county executive whom Walker replaced in office.

Walker and his 2010 campaign for governor that was run out of the Milwaukee county executive's office are now the focus of a criminal John Doe probe that has resulted in numerous criminal charges and convictions.

Walker has retained criminal defense attorneys, set up a criminal defense fund (a first for a governor in Wisconsin history), and likely will face criminal charges unless an immunity deal is reached.

"The recall is not about public employees nor is it about politics as usual. It is about Walker's toxic brand of political fundamentalism -- heartless and historically unprecedented -- that should repel fair-minded, mainstream voters everywhere,"  writes Paul Fanlund in the Capital Times.

This political fundamentalism is intended to carve up the electorate as Walker takes in $millions from out-of-state contributors, some $60,000 of which has already been transferred to his criminal defense fund.

Madison TV anchor gets death threat over signing recall petition against Scott Walker

Tony Galli of WKOW TV (Madison) reports on the Madison Police report dated March 29, 2012 indicating a phone caller made a death threat to anchor Rob Starbuck of WISC TV (Madison) for Starbuck's reported signing of the petition to recall Gov. Scott Walker.

This continues a pattern of death threats, harassment and assaults made against the recall volunteers, now extended to people who signed the recall petition. Violent and unhinged.

The report reads that an "anonymous male caller" unleashed a "verbal tirade" to the phone receptionist and states Starbuck "should be wearing a bulletproof vest, better yet he should be wearing it on his head."

The receptionist said she was"disturbed" by the incident, the report reads, and advised her colleagues of the phone call and threat.

Further, the receptionist guessed that the suspect (the caller) is "male, approximately 50 to 60 year-old."

This seriously sounds like my neighbor a recall volunteer and I encountered in December on Richmond Drive in Fitchburg, who lives a few miles from WISC TV.

From Total Recall Weekend and the Few Mad Republicans on the occasional fury that anyone dare recall Scott Walker.

One such Republican—angry and red-faced—who lives on Richmond Drive in Fitchburg, screamed at us this Sunday morning, 'You shouldn't be here doing this. You have no right. What are your names?'

His screaming, literally, continued, as we were leaving and his wife pulled him into the house, in a scene one guesses is played out often.

Our neighbor, for real, has something wrong with him, and matches the age and instability of the guy who called in the death threat. No other evidence connects him to the crime.

We can't ignore this. No matter that politicians see no need to protect this woman's sense of security in her own home.

A Hartland man told 27 News he used television news video to contact people who signed recall petitions against Governor Scott Walker, prompting at least one person to contact police.

“It wasn’t a harassing call by any means,” Kevin Stoll told 27 News.

A Dane County resident named Michelle, who asked that her identity be kept private because Stoll had already obtained some of her personal information, characterized a call she received from him Nov. 25 as harassing.

“It’s 10:30 at night and there’s apparently somebody who knows where you live. It’s just a very unnerving and frightening feeling.”

Michelle said Stoll was a stranger to her, refused to identify himself and challenged her to defend her decision to sign a recall petition.

“When this person seemed to be getting a little bit hostile, I ended the phone call and immediately contacted the authorities.”

Stoll told 27 News he used video from a 27 News story on the recall effort to get identifying information on people who signed petitions. The story was ninety seconds in length and included less than ten seconds of names, numbers and signatures on recall petitions, but that videotape was in motion and not highlighted.

Another Dane County resident, who also requested anonymity, said Stoll called her home three times shortly after the 27 News broadcast. The resident said she refused to answer Stoll’s final call, but an answering machine recorded it.

“You can’t even defend your position, now you won’t answer the phone,” the caller said in the recorded message reviewed by 27 News.

“You’ve signed a petition, where they put your name and number up on TV and you’re behaving like a (expletive) coward.”

Michelle said a Madison police officer conducted a preliminary investigation into the call she received and told her in the absence of the caller using abusive or threatening language or making repeated calls to her, the hands of law enforcement were tied. A Madison police spokesperson has yet to comment on the department’s handling of Michelle’s complaint.

Stoll indicated to 27 News he may be involved in verifying recall petition signatures, but provided no specifics and mentioned no affiliations with any political groups. Available online campaign finance records show Stoll contributed $400 to a republican district attorney in 2002.
