Russ Feingold: Government in Secret

Thank you Russ Feingold.

See Russ Feingold: Government in Secret in the LA Times via Common Dreams:

... It’s a given in our democracy that laws should be a matter of public record. But the law in this country includes not just statutes and regulations, which the public can readily access. It also includes binding legal interpretations made by courts and the executive branch. These interpretations are increasingly being withheld from the public and Congress. ...

In a serious presidential campaign, the Bush administration's performance on the issue of secrecy in a democratic society would be debated endlessly by the major candidates. How about you, Sen. McCain: What's your opinion on the Bush administration's commitment to secrecy?

I don't believe we will get this discussion in the campaign from George Stephanopoulos, Charles Gibson and Wolf Blitzer.

Campaign Notes - Stephanopoulos Pushing the Clinton Spin, Again

Update: Stephanopoulos is holding a campaign event - 'townhall meeting' - for his former boss Hillary during his show on Sunday

Via MAL Contends

- On ABC's News's This Week with George Stephanopoulos, viewers were treated to a graphic comparing the two Democratic candidates' performance thus far in the primary.

Stephanopoulos, following the disingenuous Clinton spin that uses its logic of primary-election-state performance morphing into general-election state performance, displayed the electoral votes (general election) total of every primary state that the candidates have won.

Why are electoral votes important now? Does Stephanopoulos really believe performances in Democratic primary states are, even arguably, predictors of performance in general elections? If so, Bill Clinton would never have been president, because Clinton lost most of New England in the 1992 Democratic primary. The reason for displaying the graphic is clear.

Coming off his deplorable performance as a debate moderator, Stephanopoulos can be counted on to continue his preening for the Clinton campaign, buying every Clinton spin possible and framing the election for his old chums.

But gee maybe Stephanopoulos is right. And since John McCain won New York and California in the GOP primary, McCain can be counted on to win these states in the general election. But that really doesn't make any sense, does it?

- Just ran across this item below in Buzzflash linking to an ABC News item.

The Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee meets Saturday, May 31 in Washington, D.C., to consider whether DNC panel exceeded its authority when it stripped Florida and Michigan of all of its delegates for holding their primaries before Feb. 5th, 2008.

No word yet on the composition of the Committee or the deadlines and consequences of the Committee's deliberating. Will keep you posted.
Update: One take: Hillary Will Steal The Nomination on May 31 Owing to Composition of Committee

Obama Hits Back

If they don't get it here, they gonna it out there with the Republicans.

Such is the occasional justification offered for Hillary's tactics when her campaign veers into lies and sleaze against Obama that go against conceptions of fair play and justice.

But the 'gonna get it out there' sounds a lot like the muttered idiocies of an abuser.

Barack Obama neither fights, flees nor freezes in the face of the assault of arguably the most inane presidential campaign debate of modern politics, as Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos delivered a pathetic performance, with a civil but typical Hillary on display.

He offers an agrument in rebuttal ande speaks to people as though they were adult voters.

In North Carolina yesterday, Obama delivers so reasonably and effectively that Obama's over-the-top critics have made mockeries of themselves, and implanted a meme in the political consciousness of what are the ridiculous charges next that they are going to try to sell.

“That was the roll-out of the Republican campaign against me in November. That is what they will do,” Mr. Obama said. “They will try to focus on all these issues that don’t have anything to do with how you pay your bills at the end of the month.” (NYT. Jeff Zeleny)

Obama brings it all back home to substance with a cool that is a pleasure to watch viz a vis Gibson, Stephanopoulos, and Hillary.

Clinton Pretends There Was a Debate Last Night

via MAL Contends

The campaign reactions tell the story.

You can see the difference in the integrity of the two campaigns by their reactions to this inane, imbecilic forum last night by two manifestly unqualified debate moderators.

There was serious a debate last night and Hillary won - says Hillary's campaign.

Obama’s site offered Americans the opportunity to comment on this travesty, "Post Debate: Any thoughts? If you're tired of a slash and burn politics that trades distraction for real debate, you don't have to sit idly and watch anymore."

Clinton’s site pretended that this was a real, substantive debate, "Hillary's Reviews Are In: 'The Winner,' 'Strong Presence,' 'In Her Element'" [Just like Hillary is pretending there was a primary in Michigan and Fla.]

Hillary is still the same, old, lying politician to which more and more Americans are taking a dislike.

No need to cite from last night; it's a waste of time that only Hillary could dignify.

Gibson and Stephanopoulos Are Sad, Make Fox Look Substantive

Update II: An open letter to Charlie Gibson and George Stephanapoulos

Update: Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, turned in shoddy, despicable performances.

via MAL Contends

Tonight’s debate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania featured two completely out-of-touch, inane elitists who would not know the concerns of the American people if they were paid—Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama offered a civil and fine performance in contrast to the two moderators who served as a microcosm of what is wrong with presidential elections.

One would not realize that America faces a $3-trillion war based and run on lies, a $9-trillion projected debt, a corrupt government, and debt-ridden American families hanging on to or looking for decent jobs.

No what’s important, Gibson and Stephanopoulos assure us, are sniper controversies, the use of the word "bitter," what someone's pastor said, and what someone's neighbor did 40 years ago.

Hillary and Obama did well.

Gibson and Stephanopoulos are preening annoyances.

Can we have the election without them?
