Mitt Romney remains unwilling to explain

today's economic royalists.

In Madison, Wisconsin today one commitment I want President Obama to make is: I will protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from the people who would destroy our earned social insurance against the economic royalists. The vision of the Republican Party is hostile to the health of our families.

Mitt Romney lied well last night.

So, we must install Romney; gut Medicare and Medicaid; and trash working families who owe their very lives to the glorious 'wealth creators'—the protectors of traditional values against the dark forces endangering our land from within and without.

This is the Republican argument.

Paul Krugman aptly describes the GOP argument and Romney's lies last night as a "sick joke."

Sure, I want President Obama to speak out, growl if that what it takes, and call out the lies of the bigots and economic royalists.

This desire is continual.

Consequently, the president's distaste for interrupting Mitt Romney on stage last night is less important than Mr. Obama making clear commitments to protect social insurance, the right of workers to organize and sell their labor product, the right to vote and a women's right to choose what to do with her own body.

In Madison, Wisconsin today one commitment I wish to hear from President Obama is: I will protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from the people whom were they put into office would destroy our earned social insurance bulwarks against economic royalists and their predatory tools: Romney, Ryan, Thompson and Akin.

This action is 'winning' the debate.

The GOP bubble is full of demons who emerge to wreak havok and threaten America with their evil might.

In 2008, one such monster was ACORN, committing a massive crime against our country's political health, we were told.

In October 2008 in the third presidential debate, John McCain said, ACORN was "on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy," repeating the GOP talking point.

That the GOP charge and political talking point lacked any factual basis was not the point; exclusionary voter ID legislation came to the rescue.

And President Obama, beneficiary of that great fraud that destroyed the fabric of democracy, was illegitimate.

Just knew there was something about that guy.

Worth noting is that McCain, the crusading reformist, dropped his heroic pursuit of the massive fraud conspiracy after he lost the 2008 election.

Religion

This season in the GOP bubble, President Obama is attacking religious freedom.

"I don't think we've seen in the history of this country the kind of attack on religious conscience, religious freedom, religious tolerance that we've seen under Barack Obama," said Mitt Romney in the Arizona debate last night, in an attempt to match Rick Santorum and virtually every GOP politician.

That the GOP charge and political talking point lacks any factual basis is not the point of course.

Sex

Now the GOP has gone off the deep end, repeating an inartful lie about an activity—sex and contraception—that most Americans enjoy, [and wish for the GOP to deescalate its interventions.]

The last time the GOP went this bat-crazy about sex was 1998, a crusade resulting in President Clinton's highest approval numbers and demands from the American people for the GOP to move on.

The Other Man

The problem for the GOP is that most Americans like President Obama and are growing tired of the GOP fake outrage game that now just looks very sad.

Stem Cells—Thompson, Neumann and Fitz Have to Answer in Radicalized GOP

Imagine if the lost decade of 2001-2009 saw a Manhattan Project-size effort funding stem cells—treating Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, paralysis, Leukemia, blindness; imagination and political will are the only impediments to what stem cells may do in the future.

U.S. Senate candidate, Tommy Thompson, needs to answer to the Wisconsin people on stem cell research, namely Thompson's flip-flopping.

Pioneering scientists like University of Wisconsin-Madison professor, James Thompson, should be supported in the lab as though our families' health and lives depend on it; and not have to wage a political fight against the Republican Party that is steadfastly hostile to the promise of "human embryonic stem cell research, ... a [GOP] position running counter to both scientific and public opinion."

GOP candidates for Senate, Mark Neumann and Scott Fitzgerald, need to explain their extremism on this public-minded research as well.

As Alan I. Leshner and Dr. Thomson write in their December 3, 2007 column defending embryonic stem cell research, "Standing in the Way of Stem Cell Research":

Efforts to harness the versatility of embryonic stem cells, and alleviate suffering among people with an array of debilitating disorders, began less than 10 years ago. Since then, scientists have continued to pursue embryonic stem cells because of their ability to transform into blood, bone, skin or any other type of cell. The eventual goal is to replace diseased or dysfunctional cells to help people with spinal cord injuries, neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions. ...

Federal funding is essential for both adult and embryonic stem cell research, even as promising alternatives are beginning to emerge.

Unfortunately, under the policy President Bush outlined on Aug. 9, 2001, at most 21 stem cell lines derived from embryos before that date are eligible for federal funding. American innovation in the field thus faces inherent limitations. Even more significant, the stigma resulting from the policy surely has discouraged some talented young Americans from pursuing stem cell research.

On this, Wisconsin should listen and be guided by Dr. Thompson, not Tommy Thompson and Republican extremists.

Joe Lieberman Signals Support for Willard Mitt Romney

It's difficult to conceive of a more disingenuous, craven, and small-minded man in the modern era of American politics than Sen. Joe Lieberman.

And this designation says much as modern American politics has sunk to levels of depravity, narcissism, and self-conscious lying that would make Joe McCarthy blush.

Yet the name, Joe Lieberman, has descended to the level of Joe McCarthy as Lieberman leaves the political stage after his senate term expires in 2013, and one presumes for now that Lieberman will step down and help—in some manner—a Republican succeed his senate seat amid dropping approval numbers. But there also appears to be bigger plan for Joe: Willard.

Romney has already assemblied foriegn policy and financial backers comprising a virtual who’s who of the Amercan, pro-Likud Party establishment. And the U.S.-Israel Lobby is little more than a GOP Front Group.

Rather than speculate on what drives Joe Lieberman, or even substantiate why Liar Joe well deserves the McCarthy label [if it isn't clear now, you won't agree], Lieberman's latest mini-crusade is to evoke the religious test clause of the U.S. Constitution in defense of Willard Mitt Romney, to whom the GOP establishment is desperately turning even as Romney inartfully waffles his way around the country to Karl Rove's stage management, in the process managing to make John Kerry appear a man of steel and principle by comparison.

Lieberman thinks he can be an asset to the most powerful GOP political operatives with whom he already works, so his address at Brigham Young University yesterday in which he lent his wisdom on religion in the presidential campaign race signals his role in the 2012 general election.

BYU welcomed U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman to campus Tuesday where he spoke to students in the Marriott Center in a forum address titled 'Faith and the Public Square.'

Sen. Lieberman expressed a special connection to the Mormon faith and Brigham Young University because of the core principles that the university stands for. ...

'America has been from the beginning a faith-based initiative and anybody who tries to separate faith from the public square is doing something unnatural and ultimately bad for our country.'

Lieberman will appeal to religious tolerance in defence of Romney as though we didn't already have enough policy and personal reasons to think Romney would be a horrendous president. It will be a tamed-down variation of the discredited smear that if don't like Israel's human rights records, militarism and bigotry, then you are an anti-Semite. Similarly, if you don't like Romney and Mormonism, then you are a bigot.

But Holy Joe will at least supply some fun as his sanctimonious impersonation of the cartoon character, Snagglepuss [my Jackie says Lieberman sounds just like him, only meaner], brings a chuckle.

Yesterday, here at RD, I speculated that the Romney campaign would need to find surrogates who could speak broadly to the issue of religion in the 2012 campaign. After all, Romney told voters in Iowa late last week that he would not answer “misinformation” about Mormonism, nor would he deliver a follow-up to his 2007 address on faith. And candidate Romney is not especially suited to speaking in unscripted ways about sticky personal issues, let alone about the myriad sensationalized aspects of Mormonism. That much is clear.

The first of those surrogates may have now appeared. Yesterday, Senator Joseph Lieberman spoke at Brigham Young University, touching upon the role of religion in the 2012 race.

“The second religious controversy in the 2012 campaign is of course close to BYU,” said Lieberman. “And it is that two members of the Church are running for president. One of them, Governor Romney, a distinguished graduate of this university, may well end up as the Republican nominee. And if Governor Romney is nominated Americans will be challenged again to be true to our founding principles of equality of opportunity and the clear prohibition in the Constitution, Article 6, of a religious test being applied for public office.”
